Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment

At Haywood EMC, your electric bill includes an itemized list of charges. Your Haywood EMC bill typically consists of the following:

• A Basic Facilities Charge – This set charge covers the maintenance of power lines and equipment necessary to deliver power to your account location.
• An Energy Charge – This covers the amount of energy used during the billing cycle.
• Required taxes and Environmental Fees – These are government mandated charges that must be paid by all electric utilities’ customers or members.
• A Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment (WPCA) – This page is dedicated to explaining the WPCA, since it’s calculation is more involved than the above charges.

What is a Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment (WPCA)?

Over time, the cost of electricity generated through different sources, such as fossil fuels or renewable energy sources, changes. For example, when the cost of natural gas increases, the cost of generating energy with natural gas increases. When these costs increase, the WPCA also increases. When the cost of generating energy through these sources decreases, the WPCA decreases. These changes can occur throughout each year.

Haywood EMC is a not-for-profit electric cooperative. This means when the costs increase, your charges increase to pay power supply expenses, not for the profit of the cooperative. When power costs decrease, your charges decrease along side the generation costs.
