The Opportunity for Members To “Help Each Member Cope”
Haywood EMC implemented a community service program to assist families or individuals experiencing hardships paying energy costs due to extreme weather conditions, a decrease in household income, or unusual or unexpected crises beyond their control. This program is called “Helping Each Member Cope” (Project HEMC).
How Project HEMC Works
Members will be able to contribute to Project HEMC by having their monthly electric bills rounded up to the next even dollar.
- Example: If your month’s bill is $86.81, then your bill would be rounded up to $87.
- The difference—$0.19—would be contributed to Project HEMC.
- It has been estimated that a member would contribute an average of $0.50 per month, or about $6 per year.
Why Your Contribution Matters
The high cost of heating fuel is a major concern for all of us, but more so for our neighbors in need.
By contributing to Project “Helping Each Member Cope,” you can help provide them with an emergency supply of whatever heating fuel they use—gas, oil, electricity, or wood.
The cooperative began rounding up electric bills over a decade ago and has helped members across our service territory.
How to Participate
If you want to participate in the “Helping Each Member Cope” program:
- Call our office at (828) 452-2281.
- One of our friendly customer service representatives will help you get started.
- Your electric bills will then be automatically rounded up to the next highest even dollar.
- The added cents will go toward helping your neighbors in need.
