NC GreenPower is an independent, nonprofit organization established to improve North Carolina’s environment through voluntary contributions toward renewable energy and the mitigation of greenhouse gases. A landmark initiative approved by the N.C. Utilities Commission, NC GreenPower is the first statewide green energy program in the nation supported by all the state’s utilities and administered by Advanced Energy, an independent nonprofit corporation located in Raleigh, N.C. The goal of NC GreenPower is to supplement the state’s existing power supply with more green energy – electricity generated from renewable resources like the sun, wind and organic matter. As of 2008, NC GreenPower also offers carbon offsets to address growing concerns about the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment. |
Here’s how NC GreenPower works:
- Participation is completely voluntary; Customers decide to join.
- Customers who choose to participate may enroll in one or both of the following programs:
Renewable Energy: A typical contribution of just $4 per month adds one block of 100 kilowatt-hours of green energy to North Carolina’s power supply. Large-volume users – usually from the corporate sector – may contribute towards 100 or more blocks per month at a rate of $2.50 per block with a different energy mix. Over a year, one block subscribed monthly is the approximate environmental equivalent to 972 pounds of coal that would have been required to produce the same amount of energy. That’s like planting 192 trees!
Carbon Offset: A $4 monthly contribution will mitigate 500 pounds of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent (greenhouse gas emissions). Over a year, one block of carbon offset subscribed monthly equates to not driving a mid-sized car 6,000 miles. That’s equivalent to a roundtrip flight to Japan!
- NC GreenPower contributions will be itemized on the customer's monthly statement and appear as an additional charge on their regular electric bill.
- All NC GreenPower contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
- All contributions are passed along to NC GreenPower in their entirety.
Customers who would prefer to make a one-time contribution to NC GreenPower - instead of monthly contributions - should send it to NC GreenPower, 909 Capability Drive, Suite 2100, Raleigh, NC 27606 or make a payment online at NC GreenPower. Customers can also purchase NC GreenPower Gift Cards, and find information on offsetting travel or events from the NC GreenPower website. For more information, visit www.ncgreenpower.org
